How to land your drone when a bird attacks it: Tips and accessories to avoid damages

If at any time, you are flying your drone in an area surrounded by trees and by chance a bird has built its nest nearby, you are going to find yourself in a unique situation.

You will have a bird in a bad mood trying to move your drone away from that area to protect its nest since it thinks that the drone you are flying is a threat.

And in that case, there are several things that you must take into account to be able to return the drone to the starting point or to a safe landing place without crashing or injuring the bird.

In the video below, you will be able to see the bad and the good of the reaction taken at the moment of rescuing your drone from the attack.

Bird vs Drone

Magpie attacking drone to drive it away from its territory

As you could see, the bird begins to launch very close attacks against the drone, its intention is to drive away any predator that could threaten its nest, which is surely nearby.

In the video the drone is recording, you can see the bird approaching, it tries to drive away the threat but without touching the drone.

The first evasion maneuver is to return to the starting point immediately, so as to not disturb the bird in its environment.

As the Drone returns, the bird returns with it to continue trying to move it away from the area, and the Drone already being at the landing point hovering, but the situation becomes a bit more complicated.

Pilot Errors

The second maneuver to try in this situation, which is a mistake, is to fly the Drone from side to side and up and down to avoid the bird, this is not going to make the bird go away and all you will achieve is crashing, injuring the bird and breaking the drone, something you do not want to happen.

Remember that the worst mistake in flight situations with your drone is to lose your cool, try to leave your drone static and stay calm in order to make the best possible decision.

How to land your drone when a bird attacks it

In the last section of the video, you can see that the best solution is to slowly fly towards the landing zone, when you are directly over the place where you are going to land your drone, you can start to lower it as slowly as possible.

In this case, there is no need to hurry, maybe on the way back, the bird will keep trying to push the drone away, but because of the noise the propellers make, the bird will only make attack attempts but normally it will not touch your drone, remember that the bird will not be sure what could happen if it touches the Drone, so it won't take too much risk.

So if the bird is being persistent and getting close to your drone, go back and land slowly.

Where to fly your drone after a bird attacks it

Now you will have to get far away from the area where you were flying your drone, surely there are many birds around in the same situation trying to protect their nests.

Normally this happens at certain times of the year, but if so, you can move to a clear area that does not have many trees around.

Accessories that will help you when a bird attacks your drone

There are some drone accessories that are very useful to avoid these problems, below we will show you what they are and how they work.

Stickers with facial expressions for drone

Decals or stickers with facial expressions for drones are used to trick birds into thinking that the drone is another animal. With this accessory, the birds will see eyes on your drone and they will think that it is a strong predator and they will not get so close.

It is the same strategy that various animals in their environment use to appear stronger.

Propeller protectors

These protectors will be useful in case the bird starts to attack the drone and comes to touch it, the idea is that if there is some type of contact, neither of them suffers damage, the best option would be to have the protective cage since it would cover the propellers completely.
